Jagger’s younger brother, Chris born 19 December , is also a musician. I was one of those kids who just liked to sing. Some kids sing in choirs; others like to show off in front of the mirror. In , Jagger passed the eleven-plus and went to Dartford Grammar School , which now has the Mick Jagger Centre , named after its most famous alumnus, installed within the school’s site. Jagger and Richards lost contact with each other when they went to different schools, but after a chance encounter on platform two at Dartford railway station in July , resumed their friendship and discovered their shared love of rhythm and blues , which for Jagger had begun with Little Richard. While Richards and Jones planned to start their own rhythm and blues group, Blues Incorporated , Jagger continued to study business on a government grant as an undergraduate student at the London School of Economics , and had seriously considered becoming either a journalist or a politician, comparing the latter to a pop star.

Anglo Concertina Buyer’s Guide Lachenal In a competitive concertina-manufacturing and selling environment, the Lachenal company produced a range of very fine instruments, including many “student” models. Anglo Lachenals are, as far as I know, all considered “student” grade. They’re good instruments with “real” steel or brass concertina reeds and construction, but the action and sound won’t be as nice or as consistent as some other makes mentioned below.
These instruments were all made in the UK, so “vintage English” usually refers to a Lachenal, Wheatstone, Jeffries or Crabb, and implies superior compared to the Italian Stagis quality of construction, sound, and playability action. If you can afford it, one of these vintage concertinas will be a fine instrument on which to learn, and frankly, you might never need to purchase another instrument as long as you live. They had a metal-ended model available for a little more, but since I was already a bit over my budget, I got the wooden-end model.

Some of the earliest applications had been in by Kirsnick, an organ builder in Copenhagen. His assistant, Rackwitz, showed the well known European organist and organ architect George Joseph Vogler b. Vogler demonstrated the free reeds at every opportunity and was very influential. In , he built a portable organ called The Orchestrion and toured Europe with it.
It reputedly had pipes in a single swell box with free instead of striking reeds. So famous was he, that a poem entitled Abt Vogler was written by Robert Browning. Five verses from it were re-produced in ROS Bulletin vol. Some notes on his work:

Cameras Film and Plate Holders This section looks at film and plate holders as accessories or attachments rather than integral changing mechanisms within cameras and concentrates on apparatus available in Britain. From the outset of photography ways have been sort to lighten the load of the photographer. In a period when whole-plate size glass plates held in dark-slides were the norm their weight limited what could be carried on an excursion.
It might be thought that the introduction of celluloid in sheet and roll form was the answer that would sweep away the use of glass. This was not the case however; the uptake of celluloid was by no means immediate and probably did not overtake the use of glass with the serious amateur until the mid s, it did though encourage many more people to take-up photography.

Although free reeds were used occasionally in pipe organ ranks in France and Germany in the 18th century, some of the first separate instruments were experimental ones built by people such as Charles Wheatstone, an inventor and scientist later to become Sir Charles, with a house at 20 Park Cresent, London – later to become the headquarters of the UK Medical Research Council.

Tell us about it. This paper reconstructs its history by using period accounts from newspapers, books and family histories to document the social gatherings where it was played, and the vendors who sold it. The Anglo-German concertina was enormously popular all across Ireland during its heyday, amongst people of nearly all social and economic groups. Its later concentration in Clare was not a result of how it arrived, but of local cultural and economic factors that aided its barest survival there while it was completely dropped—and all but forgotten—elsewhere in the country.

Concertinas in General Concertinas have a unique shape, ranging from four to twelve sides in cross-section. Concertinas have two keyboards, one at each end of the instruments bellows. There are no fixed chords on a concertina; all of the buttons are individual notes. The number of notes and systems vary so greatly that a player of one system will almost certainly not be able to pick up a concertina of a different system and play it without having to almost learn it from scratch.
Each side of the instrument has its own finger, thumb or wrist strap and when in use it is usually supported on the knee. With compact size and light weight, the concertina can be visually entertaining, as players are able to move around with ease. This is one of the things that has made it very popular.

Studio set at Blists Hill Museum. Part of the camera back revolved rather like that of a Mamiya RB67 enabling portrait or landscape format. Having focused on the subject with a brass wheel and rack arrangement the Teak plate holder would be inserted into wooden grooves in the camera back which would then push the focussing screen further along the grooves.
The plate holder had then taken the place of the screen and you would be ready to take your first photograph having pulled out the dark slide. One plate holder was big enough to take three exposures by moving the plate holder further along the grooves each time though taking three exposures of one sitter would be frowned upon by the branch manager and, if it occurred too often, might be reported to the Regional? Head Office in Wolverhampton.

Amboina burl was the premium material for the finest vintage concertinas, and this one is no exception. It is in almost unplayed new condition; most flaps and pads are original; the finish is bright and unworn, the bellows and their papers are immaculate, The reeds are the incredibly rare silver-brass alloy used only on the best instruments, having the sweet tone of brass reeds but additionally a bright crisp sound from the silver.

To this end, we asked ourselves some serious questions about the nature of the journey and scoured the state for answers. The results are a mix of quick jaunts, some to the middle of big cities and others to the end of a road to nowhere, some with focused activities and others whose focus is inactivity. It is a test model for the private-public partnerships that are being considered for managing the facilities in some state parks, but more to the point, it represents a new way of accommodating people who want to commune with nature but still sleep on a firm mattress.
The acre setting is wild and natural enough to attract bald eagles from fall through winter and endangered black-capped vireos and golden-cheeked warblers in the summer. The 64 spacious, spare rooms have covered porches with rockers but no televisions. Those who have trouble decompressing will find a TV in the bar-family room. Not least, there is a surprisingly good restaurant—far better than the one at Big Bend National Park, for instance—serving up everything from steak and shrimp to polenta sandwiches at reasonable prices.
